Flamethrowers
Flamethrowers were used by the Germans in the early part of the war. They were used to throw burning fuel at soldiers in trenches. There were two models of flamethrowers used in World War I, one was a smaller one person thrower with only a maximum length of 18 meters and the other was unreasonably big model and covered about 32 meters.

Trench Mortar
Trench mortars were old weapons that had been around for a while before World War I. They were simply tubes that fired projectiles at enemies. The pros of trench mortars were that one could fire it from the safety of a trench and that it was lighter than some artillery. In the beginning of the war only Germany had trench mortars but the French soon made them too. The British were a little slower waiting for their Prime Minister to demand the trench mortars before making them.

Tanks
Tanks were not created by one person. They have been around since the 18th century just being improved more and more throughout history. The British and the French were in the lead for tank development while German was slower and focused more on anti-tank weapons.

Rifles
Rifles were the most common weapon used in the war. For the most part every solider had a rifle. They may have been the most common weapon in the war but that doesn't mean that they were perfect. They were hard to handle and weren't very effective because they were one-shots. The rifle however didn't get any improvements during the war time.

Poison Gas
The French were the first to use gas, they used a version of tear gas. Later the Germans experimented with a gas that made soldiers sneeze violently, and also with tear gas. Actual poisoning gas wasn't used until the Second Battle of Ypres, where poor French soldiers first found out the effects the chlorine gas had on men- it destroyed respiratory systems.

Machine Guns
Machine guns were used in World War I. They were very heavy (weighing 30k-60k) and therefore weren't used by rapidly advancing troops. It took 4 to 6 men to operate a single machine. Another problem of the machine guns was that they overheated easily. To solve this problem vents were put on the guns or water was used to cool it down. In the war Germany, along with many other countries used machine guns but Britain openly objected the new weapons.

Bayonets
Bayonets are long knifes. They were first invented in France during the 1700s but were still common in World War I. Both the Central powers and Allies used bayonets. Many soldiers joked that they were just for buttering bread because they were a little impractical most of the times. Bayonets may have been used more as a tool that a weapon.

Airplanes were used quite a bit in World War one. Many countries used planes a few of them being Germany,Great Britain, Italy, Austria, France, and The United States. The planes jobs were reconnaissance(spying), fighting, and bombing. Planes played a great roll in the war because planes allowed both the Allies and the Central powers to bomb and fight now with
speed and accuracy.
