When the war started, Alexander Samsonov was given command of the invasion of east Prussia. surrounding the German Eighth Army the commander gave the order to retreat. In a German cordon most of the Russian Second was killed. The small town of Ypres, Belgium was taken at the start of the war. In early October the British Expeditionary Force(BEF) was able to recapture the town. After this there were two more battle at the town of Ypres. This battle consisted of a brutal gas attack on the Italians from the Austrian-Hungarians. More than 70,000 Italians were dead or wounded. The point of this battle was simply to weaken the Italian army. The battle of Jutland was a sea battle fought between the British grand Fleet and the German high seas fleet, the two most powerful naval fleets at the time. Along the river Seine Joseph Joffre, Commander-In-Chief planed to attack the German 1st Army. Commander of the BEF agreed to help to attack the German 1st. This battle was a major victory for the Ottoman Empire. This is also called the Gallipoli Campaign. After the failed land assault the attacking forces withdrew to Egypt. The campaign was fought on the Gallipoli Peninsula. Around the peninsula granted sea access to Russia. Allies to Russian launched a naval attack on the peninsula. The longest battle of World war One was nearly 11 months. Verdun was a French garrison town. Crown Price Wilhelm led a million troops to Verdun With the plan that the Germans would "bleed the French army white.". Eventual German troops would be called back to defend their front-line at Somme. |
